New Distribution Centre for Swiss Food Retailer COOP: A Warehouse Automation Masterpiece

Investing 600m CHF in a new central distribution centre, COOP chose TGW as a partner and general contractor. With a fully-automated frozen DC and a chilled DC at its core, the new site has become a benchmark in grocery warehouse solutions. In 2012 COOP decided to concentrate • 3 regional distribution centres, • 3 deep-freeze distribution centres, • 3 large bakeries, and • 3 large pastry shops at a single site in Schafisheim, in what was to become an integrated automated warehouse system of more than 240,000 m2. "Concentrating operations in one location allowed us to invest in automation and robotics", says Daniel Hintermann, Logistics Director at COOP. Two essential parts of the Schaffisheim site are: ► The new national DC for frozen goods A deep-freeze warehouse, fully automated at -23°. The automation includes the whole process, from depalletising and storing in the shuttle-warehouse to retrieving, picking and automated full case mixed palletising. ► An automated DC for refrigerated goods A regional DC for appr. 300 branches, designed as a highly dynamic order picking system. The DC consists of a Stingray-shuttle-system, including automated depalletising and automated loading of roll cages.
