Technology Forum 2019 - Hardware independence as a strategic choice

Vortrag beim Technologieforum Bildverarbeitung 8./9.10.2019 in Unterschleißheim (Deutschland) Referent: Jon Vickers, STEMMER IMAGING Ltd. *** Presentation at the Machine Vision Technology Forum 8-9 October 2019 in Unterschleissheim (Germany) Speaker: Jon Vickers, STEMMER IMAGING Ltd. The choice of a software basis for a project has implications for the future and evolution of the project. The speed of development in camera hardware is faster than ever – regular choices now include Gig E Vision (1000 Base-T, N-BaseT and 10GigE), USB3 Vision (USB 3.1 gen1 and USB 3.1 gen2), Cameralink, CoaXPress and various proprietary GenICam Transport Layers (GenTL). With the speed of development comes a race between hardware manufacturers – which is the best choice now… and which in the future? More than just cameras, what if the processing platform could change from a Windows PC to a Linux PC to an ARM-based embedded system? Inter-operability in all cases means that the core application can stay the same while the hardware choices are flexible. In this presentation, the dangers, opportunities and capabilities are explored, with a view to reducing risk and making the most of the rapid developments in hardware.
