NORD’s two-stage NORDBLOC.1® helical gearboxes paired with NORDAC® BASE variable frequency drives were selected for use with automated cow grooming brushes built by Celi Invest ApS. This Danish company chose NORD products for their rugged, reliable design that can handle up to 18 hours of use per day in a covered outdoor environment. The internal PLC also allowed for custom parameterization to start the unit when a cow rubs up against the brush, stop when it was no longer in use, and reverse if a resistance threshold was met to avoid the cows’ tails being caught up in the brush. Cow brushes are becoming more common in dairies as operators look for ways to provide enrichment and a more natural environment for their herds. In some countries, such as Denmark, the brushes are legally required to keep the cows clean, comfortable, and healthy.
