Contributing to a customer’s productivity is sustainable. Are we creating a better environment for the future is sustainable. So there are various factors what the word sustainable brings to mind. The only companies that will survive in the long run are the ones which are actually following ethical practices, safety, well-being of their employees and minimizing their footprint. You try and leave the world in a better place than where you’re at. So I think it’s really important trying to improve in the technology that we have to make our environment safer and we were able to help other technology fields develop faster and further than we thought they could ever go. Sustainability for me means to deliver lasting results and securing a lasting relationship. It’s much wider than customers. It goes to employees, goes to society for future generations. People in the streets when I meet them they say what do you do, and I say: Basically I save the planet from poisoning. These boxes here they don’t look special but they actually treat those gases. They are basically big garbage cans. You can keep putting stuff in and it disappears and it is made safe. It is as simple as that. We are saving the earth one product at a time. I’ve lived in the city all my life so it’s feel especially good to help make it an even better place. For the future. We have equipped it with solar panels. It is around 1.3 km of solar panels. Thanks to that, we save 600 tons of carbon dioxide per year now. This is what we call leadership in Atlas Copco for sustainability.

We want people taking ownership of theirs careers, and to develop themselves, and from there the journey can start. I’ve always been able to develop myself. I started as a junior and now I am a senior. It is also good that you are allows you to grow. That is what attracts me, and to stay in this group for so long time and still be passionate about it. I think that if you work in a company which is filled with innovation and new ideas you will feel that every day is different. You will then do new work and working will be more exciting. Best place to work would be a good blend of innovative and comparative culture and at the same time a very good worklife balance. I think it’s really important to be working at a company where you believe in what they’re doing. And I think just to kind of develop my knowledge and experience. I’ve got the opportunity to travel. I’ve already been to Korea which was a good experience. It has been good. It has been like an eye opener. I like working with colleagues from such diverse countries. This way we can understand other countries cultures, our common interests and how to grow together. We sort of created an environment were people can openly ask questions and report issues, talk about their ideas and create a continuous improvement. Working globally is really what I like and what I enjoy. So travelling, meeting people, the people is what really makes it happen and Atlas Copco has a unique culture. We need to have passionate people in all of the functions that we have and from there you can build up accountability and commitment which leads to result.

So we are working very close together with our customers. I think this is the main strengths in Atlas Copco. Every customer, every continent has different needs so depending on the discussions we had before the customers come over we can define their correct needs and we can provide them when they are visiting Atlas Copco. It’s really beneficial to come and see and get to know, for instance, how Atlas Copco is in Belgium. It opens your eyes in an entirely different way. My grandfather and my father wanted me to represent the third generation of relationships with Atlas Copco. We have been working with Atlas Copco for 42 years now. And that reliability is something we need, especially for a business like ours. You have to think about what value your behaviour brings to the customer. This point is very important. What are we going to develop for the future? What will be the next step in the industry and what can we do to create new value for our customers that they even didn’t know. Service department is for us very important because if we have a good service technician and we have quick response to the customer then of course the customer is happier. So this is we try to have a service technician wherever we are. So wherever our customers are we put service people there. If we create value to our customers then we will create sustainable business.

People that are more technical and then others that are more communicative. That’s one thing I’ve learned you need to have that special blend in your team and that’s what I look for in my teams. I’m a strong promoter of diversity not only between male and female but to have different cultures as part of your team. That brings something very, very positive. A good way to measure whether you have a good workplace, a good office, a good organization is are you really looking forward to going to the office on a Monday morning. I think that is a kind of trust, a type of spirit. Can we entrust the things that we need to do to another, and trust that person? That is teamwork. We work more in teams, we decide together. It’s the Swedish way, it’s the Atlas Copco way, it’s the culture. So you can decide you’re a little bit of an entrepreneur within an enterprise. Being completely equal company, females are quite attracted to join the organization. When I enter Atlas Copco I’m not a male, I’m not a female, I’m an employee. You need everybody in order to make it work. If you don’t have that big, diverse multi functional team everything just falls flat. If you do something like this which is more a friendly social activity then you are happier to work together. It adds to the family feeling the fact that we have our clubs that creates the interaction after work. Being a part of Atlas Copco for the past two years has been the best experience of my life because it’s a roller coaster you know. It’s not just like this, it’s this. I like it. It’s always nice to see that with the people that we are really contributing to making Atlas Copco even a better company than it is today.

And those really good innovative ideas should result in our customers having the best products that can be made. The core of our company is actually our innovation center. This is where we bring in the customer and invent together. This innovation center is not for us, this is really made for the customer. The way we used to make prototypes, we made a design, we ordered it externally and then it would come in six to eight weeks later. Now, using 3D printing we can actually have a prototype within the same day. So we can make that cycle of innovation a lot shorter. Interaction is key. It is very important to capture our clients needs in the beginning of the project. So that we get their feedback and are able to tackle those comments in the beginning of the design. But it is not only about coming up with new products it's also new software, new services, new ways of doing HR, so innovation can be seen everywhere. In the past there has been a tendency to regard service activities as just fixing broken equipment. But if you look at broken equipment and you start to investigate why is it broken what is the root cause you start to generate ideas for product improvements. We get the opportunity to try and test the ideas that we have. It is in our culture. This is the Atlas Copco culture being innovative. Power connect is an app that allows you to find your machine information. And you will start the power connect app aim it at the QR code it will load and from that moment on you will arrive at the machine specific page. So at the moment we are testing how to use augmented reality. You can see the real world surrounding you and over that real world it superimposes visual 3D images, how to find the problem and that is delivering value to the customer. 24 years in I have not run out of ideas cause I do not stop having ideas. I do not stop innovating. The world doesn't stand still so we can’t.

Chakan, a state-of-the-art factory

With that we are almost autonom in energy. We save 600 tonnes of CO2 per year now. We are very proud of it, and this is what we call leadership in Atlas Copco for sustainability. We want sustainability to protect the planet. And for example with our latest compressor XRHS 650 we have saved 21 tonnes of CO2 per year. For the mine we have the new electric portable compressor XAT 400E that is completely free of CO2. We have also this building that is a Gold Certified green building. It means that the plant is not using almost any energy. It’s linked to the good insulation that we have on the roof, instead of having air conditioning. We have also an harvesting system here. So we collect the water from the roof, but also from our streets. We bring this water, we clean it, we put it in an artificial lake there. And after the after the monsoon season we are able to collect it back and reuse it. So thanks to that we are autonom in water during eight months of the year. And we are also investing every year. There is always a better way.
