ABB Robotics - Painting and sealing innovation with Volvo

The new Volvo S60L that went on sale in December 2013 in Beijing provides drivers with a quieter, cleaner, safer and more comfortable driving environment, thanks in part to ABB Robotics. The S60Lis an important car for Volvo, having achieved many “firsts” along the way. For instance, it’s the very first model to be mass-produced at the company’s factory in Chengdu, China—which happens to be the first such factory to be located outside Europe since the Swedish company was acquired by Zhejiang Geely Holding Group in 2010. It is also the first process-validated car produced in China by Volvo using an ABB Robotics solution. As China’s first automobile plant to use an environmentally-friendly, water-based soundproofing and sealing material provided by ABB, Volvo is also exploring new ways to push the barrier for improving the quality of the vehicle interior environment. To implement the use of this waterborne material—developed over a six-month period—required building a fully automated gluing station where robots spray the material onto the cars, thereby sealing, soundproofing and waterproofing them. Thirty-three different ABB robots are now hard at work in the Volvo Chengdu plant. Among them, two robots specialize in NVH applications, two in sprayable sound dampening applications, four in exterior-primer painting, eight in exterior-basecoat painting, four in exterior clearcoat painting, four painting robots, four door openers with one trunk opener in a clearcoat interior station, and four FeatherDuster robots at the pre-cleaning station.

Pallettieren - Neue Roboter, Produkte und Lösungen

ABB is further enhancing its current palletizing product line by introducing two new robots, three new grippers, and a comprehensive software program to complement its existing palletizing product range. "We are serious about serving this market," says Klas Bengtsson, Product Manager at ABB Robotics. "The new complete range now addresses all integrator and customer needs for palletizing solutions" Leading ABB's new palletizing offering is the compact, 110 kg capacity, IRB 460 - the fastest palletizing robot in the world. Capable of up to 2,190 cycles per hour, this 4-axis robot is perfect for high-speed end-of-line palletizing and bag palletizing. For high-output full-layer palletizing, ABB is introducing the IRB 760 robot. Boasting an impressive payload capacity of 450 kilograms and a reach of 3.2 meters, this robot features high wrist inertia -- double that of competitors -- that enables it to rotate heavier and larger products faster than any other robot. Three FlexGrippers round out the new hardware product offerings, including a Clamp, which comes in two sizes, for handling cases; a heavy-duty Claw for high-speed bag palletizing; and a Vacuum gripper that can handle up to five products at once. The most revolutionary aspect of the new palletizing portfolio is ABB's new software, RobotStudio Palletizing PowerPac. This program allows users to configure, simulate and program ABB robots and grippers for palletizing solutions, with little or no robot programming experience required. In summarizing the benefits of the new offerings Bengtsson is quite clear "ABB's complete range of palletizing robots can now be combined with FlexGrippers and Palletizing PowerPac to provide a cost-effective, easy to use, one-stop choice for both end users and system integrators."
